Where did all SID's money go from Food Fest?

Have you been wondering? I know I have!

We currently have about $800 collected. What do YOU think we should do with our funds? Keep this in mind, as come Fall 2010 we will be prepared to put our earnings into the hands of those who need it most.

HUNGER BANQUET SERVICE PROJECT

The Hunger Banquet is TUESDAY, March 16th from 6-8 pm in the Aloha Center room 155/165

We are making this our SID club semester service project. We need all the help we can get! Come early at 5:30 to help us get things going!

We need help with the set up and break down, ushering students, and serving food.

There will be a music benefit concert afterwards at the little theatre, if people wanna stick around.

*The Hunger Banquet will have a booth set up in the Aloha Center March 11 and 12 (this Thursday and Friday). Here, everybody MUST SIGN UP!

We need a lot of participation with this event. PLEASE COME AND HELP! YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS!

Culture Night Activity

We are having our own culture night. We have members of the club from all over the world and we would like to learn about each other!

Please bring an item whether it be food, an object, a dance, story, image, etc. ANYTHING that represents your culture.

We want to have a show and tell of cultures, snack a bit, and maybe even watch a movie if we get to it.

The crew at Food Fest, Winter 2010 was a blast.

The chocolate covered bananas were also delicious, and I'm pretty sure we did a decent job on getting some moneys to donate.

Food Fest Prep

Yesterday, Wednesday night, we got together as a club to do a little service activity for locals in the community. We discussed Food Fest and made care packages to deliver to random people, with friendly love notes to spread a message of peace and love to those around us.

Big thank you for all who came to the activity, and for helping us out! I'm sure the people will LOVE what they got at their doorstep!

All I can say is if I got this at my front door, I'd be STOKED!!!!!

Courtney was totally in the zone, and we can all conclude that she is a fabulous banana-maker with a true vision of what a banana should look like. She did an awesome job, thanks girl!

If you haven't heard already, we're selling frozen bananas dipped in chocolate. YUM YUM YUM. SOOOO GOOD!!!!! They will be selling for 5 tickets, which is about $2.50.

Hope for the best success in sales, so we can send our help to countries and people in need!

Katie and I came up with the brilliant idea to give our bananas wiggly eyes, because they're so so so cute. Wouldn't you agree?

When I was walking home, I snapped this picture. My hand jiggled, so it's blurry...but I REALLY like it!

PEACE is the way

What: Inspirational information about someone making a difference internationally

Why: because this lady lives what Students for International Development want to do

Liz Shropshire, Tuesday's campus devotional speaker, will be visiting Chad Ford's class to further enlighten and inspire BYUH students on Thursday Feb. 4th, at 3:40 in Old Gym classroom 144. You're welcome to come sit in if you're interested in hearing more from her on her efforts to teach children the value of love and peace through instruments and song. She's been instrumental in building her grassroots humanitarian arts movement through music education and performance programs. Join in!

The white girl pictured here is ME, Kylie, the author of this blog and publicity girl for SID club. I had the opportunity to help little children in Cambodia with things like gardening and playing sports, and like Liz who promotes music for peace...so can you!

Activity Alert!

WEDNESDAY Feb 3, 7:00pm - 8:00pm, ACR 136

Come to the Aloha Center and get to know some fellow SID club members while

we prepare for Food Fest and make packages for community members!

There will be some delicious food there too, YAY!

The activity will have two purposes:

1. Our first community outreach

We'll be making anonymous packages of candy, fruit, chocolate, and gift cards that will be dropped off at random doorsteps around Laie with "neighborly" notes attached. A small outreach, yes, but still effective... and a good start!

2. Food Fest prep

Some of us will be cutting and preparing poster boards for Food Fest

We'll be barbecuing Shish Kabobs as we
plan for Food Fest, our t-shirt designs, and activities.

Ideas that have been suggested so far are:

Art Exchange,
Host an "Music for Peace" open mic night,
and Paint a peace mural

We need your ideas at this opening social so we can decide as a club!

It will be very low-key and relaxing, a simple activity to get us together for the first time to discuss the semester.

SID club is volunteering to help out with the BYU-H ward farm!

Please come Saturday November 14th at 8 am, and feel free to stay for as short or long as you'd like.

We will be meeting in the TVA parking lot (by J and R building closest to the Teacher condos). This provides direct access to the ward farm.

They could really use all the hands they can get!

As far as I understood,

Food Fest was a success!

Saturday was a beautiful evening.

The weather was perfect,

the food was good,

and the company was FUN!

Calli and I stayed up to the wee hours baking thousands of cookies because we love SID that much.

Lookin' mighty fine, if ya ask me! Thanks Victoria and those who helped for preparing the dough to make it easier to bake!

Hawaii humidity does funny things to cookie dough, so our hands got real gooey and this is what happens.

Look at those and tell me they're perfect.

It's just the truth.

For those of you who get overwhelmed by really long e-mails or lots of little words, here's a simple outline of what we expect of all SID members THIS weekend. Aren't you excited? Yes, yes, YES!

Friday, 10/16, Hale 1 Lobby:

6:00 pm: Baking cookies for Food Fest--groups will gather materials and split up to different locations from here

Saturday, 10/17, Little Circle:

9:00 am: Help set up the tables, tent, etc. ANY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
4:00 pm: Shift 1 people help set up the food and drinks
5:00 pm-7:00 pm: FOOD FEST SHIFT 1, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, email Victoria the shift you are able to cover
7:00-9:00 pm: FOOD FEST SHIFT 2, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, email Victoria the shift you are able to cover
9:00-whenever, Little Circle: Shift 2 people help clean up

Those who sign up for shift 1 will arrive around 4-4:30 to SET UP

You will be PAINTING our cardboard boxes that we will use to RECYCLE!!! WE LOVE RECYCLING because WE LOVE EARTH and we ALSO love ART!

Students for International Development and McKay Center for Intercultural Understanding are teaming up and having a movie night on September 17th at 9 pm in the Little Theatre.

Information regarding both the Mckay Center and SID will be available at the event. A short inspirational film regarding international service will be played before the feature film August Rush. Come and join us!

BYU-Hawaii Sierra Leone Project

SID recently raised money to build a well in Africa. This project was focused on clean water and sanitation. Students for International Development's efforts to support this cause was able to raise $686.82, when our fundraising goal was $500.00. The event took place February 15th at BYU-Hawaii Little Circle. A description of the event and its proceeds is as follows:Adopt a Village

Adopt a Village initiates and supports community development for marginalized children and their families by meeting their basic human needs. Adopt a Village began with the goal of helping Sri Lankan tsunami victims with long-term relief and rebuilding efforts. The campaign has since evolved into an effective tool for helping communities in need. The program delivers holistic community development to children and their families in Kenya, Sierra Leone, rural China, and Sri Lanka. Supported by the Oprah’s Angel Network, and people like you, Adopt a Village services rural areas, with an emphasis on providing education to children where there is a high incidence of child poverty and child labour.

They say children are our future, and we believe the time has come!

Dear SID Members,

On behalf of PeacePlayers International – Middle East (PPI-ME), I would like to thank you and all members of the Brigham Young University – Hawaii Students for International Development (SID) Club for your fundraising efforts and generous donation of $1,000 to the PPI-ME program.

Your contribution helped enable PPI-ME to organize and host our 2009 Annual Spring Tournament, the capstone event of the programming season. This year’s tournament, held at an outdoor sports facility in Tel Aviv, brought together over 200 Arab and Jewish children from across Israel for a day of basketball, team building exercises and fun games. The SID Club donation was instrumental in funding tournament stations such as tug of war, puzzle building, water balloons and trampoline, all “off the court” teamwork activities that allowed the youth to have fun and get better acquainted with one another.

The Annual Spring Tournament is an important part of the programming year, as the positive experience it provides helps further the PPI-ME mission of uniting youth from different backgrounds. All children participate in the day’s activities as part of an integrated team made up of PeacePlayers from a wide range of communities, creating a unique atmosphere of basketball and coexistence. When asked about her experience at the 2009 Spring Tournament, Nastiya, a PeacePlayer from the Jewish community of Bet Shemesh, replied that:

"We played with girls from other teams and made new friends. I really like Siwi and Miriam from Beit Safafa. I learned I'm supposed to play under the basket, too, from Coach Samer. The best part was the basketball and I learned to see the other side of the girls, they are really nice, and not just listen to what people in my community say about Arab people. People are not like everyone says they are."

On behalf of all the children who participated in the 2009 Spring Tournament, PeacePlayers International - Middle East would like to thank you for your generous gift. Your contribution to our program has made an impact and helped us to continue working to bridge divides.

I love SID! I am so happy to see this club continued! SID is the club that allows our passion and vision to come together and initiate action to “make the changes we want to see in the world!” (Gandhi) We have endured many challenges, especially with the school policy, but all these experiences helped us to grow, be united, and see positive changes at BYU-Hawaii. Welcome to Students for International Development! Here you can find the past and latest events of SID BYU-Hawaii's efforts to better the lives of those around us.

SID, a club at BYU-Hawaii, welcomes all students to join our forces in making the world a better place by helping countries in need through fundraising money to donate to various Non-Government Organizations around the world. Through participating in events such as Food Fest and World Fest, our goal is to help others to help themselves.
